Iām Garrett Farlow,
a graduate student at the Culinary Institute of America studying wine and beverage management.
Before this, I was an Army officer flying helicopters. Most of my time was spent planning missions and managing training. Wine was not part of that world in any meaningful way.
That started to change over time.
Travel played a big role early on. I spent time in Central Asia studying abroad and learning Russian, which shifted how I thought about place and culture. Later, living in Texas and spending time in the Hill Country and along the Rio Grande near El Paso made wine feel more connected to a place instead of just something on a shelf. That was when it started to click.
What drew me in was the same idea that Anthony Bourdain talked about often. Food and beverage are a way to understand a place and the people in it. Wine just happened to be where that curiosity landed.
Far & Low Wine comes from how I have started to think about wine. On one end, there is geography, climate, and everything that shapes a place. On the other, there is the more grounded side of it. What it tastes like, who it is for, and whether it is actually enjoyable to drink. The interesting part is somewhere in between.
This site is a way to document that process as it happens.
Places, looking at regions and what makes them distinct.
Foundations, breaking down concepts so they are easier to understand and apply.
Journal, observations and insights I am learning along the way.
I am not trying to make wine more complicated than it needs to be. If anything, the goal is the opposite. To make it more approachable, more understandable, and more connected to real experiences.
If that sounds interesting, I am glad you are here.
